Wise Ch. 3: The Birth of Multimedia

From the values of the counterculture movement came the personal computer, originally conceived as a homebrew kit (the Altair). Later, Apple gave rise to the consumer-oriented personal computer, followed by IBM (burdened by command line software). Microsoft found themselves in the unique position of designing an operating system for IBM computers and IBM clones. Later, the personal computing revolution really took hold in a market geared toward education and business. Multimedia was born in the educational sector of the PC market. As new storage technologies emerged, Multimedia became more multifaceted and media-rich.
