Wise Ch. 1: Digitisation and War (Synopsis)

Chapter 1 describes the origins of multimedia technologies in Military research and development. The need for more accurate weapons trajectory calculation urged the creation of the computer. The need for small, efficient missile guidance technology led to the development of the Microprocessor and the Integrated Circuit. Vannevar Bush’s concept for the Memex was an early example of the user interface. Without these developments, our tools as multimedia artists would be non-existant. It is only with the massive budget of weapons technologies and the dire need for complex systems that our tools had come so far in such a short period of time.
