Here are my synopses for the 3 Chapters given in the email:
Chapter 1 - Digitization and War: This chapter discusses the connection between multimedia and the military. Turns out, a good portion of multimedia's origin is in the military. Processors, the Internet, calculators, even the computer itself are all byproducts of the military's need for more accurate weapons. I found the connection between multimedia and the military interesting, yet scary as well. These technologies were created with the intent of using them against other humans. How screwed up is that?
Chapter 2 - The Computer Counter-Culture: Multimedia is not just something that evolved from the military. It is an idea as well. This chapter discusses the use of technology in society/politics and why it has had such an impact on our world. It also discussed the counter-culture, new age values held by most in the industry of computers, and the thought that technology should be a tool for the people to use in their liberation.
Chapter 3 - The Birth of Multimedia: This chapter not only chronicles the evolution of the computer, but the evolution of multimedia as well. The chapter talks about multimedia, not only as it refers to the use of computers, but the different uses of it, like for business and entertainment. It wasn't until around 1979 that consumers were able to really get a piece of multimedia to use for their own.
I hope this helped you to understand the chapters. See you all in class!
