Feminists will Save the World!
This movie concept will be a compilation of the various feminist movements that have taken place since the end of the 18th century- One of the first people to take such a stance was the Englishwoman Mary Wollstonecraft. Her treatise A Vindication of the Rights of Women (1792) outlined the complaints and paths for social equality that has been emulated around the world. “First Wave” feminism came to the United States in the late 1800s. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony tirelessly worked for suffrage (the right to vote) until it was won in 1920. In the 1950s to 1980s, “Second Wave” feminism worked toward cultural integration and was led by activists such as Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem in America. Other specific feminist movements that will be outlined in the poster during the second wave are; the women's labor movement, the women's health movement, all of which focused on women's roles in the workplace and in the household, and women and their sexuality. The "third wave" began in the late 1980's and focused on women having a greater influence in politics, as well as anti-homophobia and anti-racism. I will try to include logos of various women's self-help and liberating organizations that have formed through these movements. My poster will try to encompass all of these events and "waves" in an artistic yet organized manner, though I'm not yet sure if I want to place it in a chronological order or otherwise.
