Changing the World One Project at a Time

  1. This was a fun project to work on. This one can take quite a bit of time be cause of repetitious tedious work, but it looks pretty good and can be use for a product of some kind or maybe a logo. Starting right of the bat you’re going to want to make a new comp at HVD/HDTV 720 with a frame rate set at 23.976. Before you start working on this project you might want to scan a couple pieces of crimpled, nasty paper to use as we are going to need for textures. Also scan another paper with a line drawn with crayon. Make sure your scan are set at a pretty high resolution. So after you have scanned in your two paper textures, choose one (we will call this paper one), through it on your canvas and scale it up. Now that you have your starting texture we want to make pre-compose this layer and make sure that “move all attributes is selected in the dialog box. Then go under color correction and add curves and also hue and saturation. With these effects we can give our crimpled a nice contrast and tint it a nice “blue print” color.
    After you have your main blue paper like you want it, the next thing is to get our logo or product name into the mix using the text tool. Now you can use any font you want but to get the nice blue print look I would suggest staying away from scripts. For instance I used century gothic bold. After you have the title that you want, pre-compose the text as “title”.
    Now lets start working on the animation side of this project. You notice that there are several animations in this video and you make them one by one. Start by making the outline for the title by selecting layer/auto trace. This outlines the font and makes a new layer for you. Turn off the original layer, select the auto-traced layer and go to layer/generate/stroke. Set the paint style to on transform and select all masks and stroke sequentially. On your time line make a keyframe at the beginning of your piece move forward about 15 frames and using the end transport on the stroke effect animate it up to 100%. After we have this I wanted to get a nice scribble effect to fill in the outlines. To do that duplicate the auto-traced layer and delete the stroke effect on your new layer. Turn off your outline layer, select the new layer and go to layer/generate/scribble. Set the scribble to “all masks using modes” and the wiggle type to static. Set a keyframe identical to the previous one using the end transform.
    After these effects are made, turn off all layers except the background and title. And create a new solid and turn the opacity to 0. This is going to be used to make our lines. This is where you can get creative with your piece. Zoom in to the title, and start drawing diagonal lines that go along with the text. Make sure that the lines are 45 degrees by holding down the shift and drawing the lines. You can make as many or as few as you want to your preference. Repeat these steps until you have all four layers of line including 2 diagonal, 1 vertical and 1 horizontal. When you’re done with your lines, on your four new layers turn the opacity back up to 100. Select your first line layer and go to layer/generate/stroke and set to all masks and on transparent. Using the end transform, set a keyframe at the beginning of your video at 0, and move up about 15 frames and move the end back to 100%. Now you want to add this same effect to all the other layers with lines. Using your keyboard hit (UU). This brings up everything that has been changed with this layer. Now hit (SHIFT-M) and it hides all the masks on the layer. While holding down shift, select stroke, all masks, end and paint style. Hit command C to copy, select the remaining 3 line layers and hit command V to paste the settings into the additional layers. Now go through your new layers and bring up the masks by hitting M on the keyboard. Move and drag the masks around until they are completely random.

    Now you have your animation looking good, take your other paper texture (paper 2) and drop it above the outline layer. Solo the new paper layer and the outline layer. Make sure that the new paper is big enough to cover the title. Select the outline and change it from “none” to “luma inverted matte.” Now with masks turned off you will be able to see that the outline has a texture but if your texture is not detailed enough, use curves to add contrast. Now that you have your paper-textured outline we can add this look to all of the other layers to give it a nice fluent look. Select your paper 2 layer and hit CNTL + D to duplicate. You want to make enough copies to put paper 2 above both diagonal the vertical and horizontal layers. Finally change the preexisting layers from “none” to “luma inverted matte.” After you get the animation that you want grab the layers that you have been working on move it all a couple clicks.
    Now that we are finished with the animation we want to beginning of the video where it starts very close and zooms out to see the grand finale. Take the comp that you have been working on and call it “blue print.” Take the blue print and drag it into another comp with basically pre-composes it. Choose layer/new object/null object. Drag in your crayon texture along with another paper texture. Now the crayon that I used in my piece was originally blue and the way I changed it into white is by going channel/invert and then color correction/levels. Now my line is yellow so now I go to color correction/tint making it white. Set the mode to screen so the blueprint paper shows through. Now we want to use this line to zoom into and watch it “write on.” To do that go effect/transition/linear wipe. Set wipe angle to -90 and set transition completion to 100 so we don’t see it. Move forward a bit and change the transition back to 0. Now resize the line back into the composition as a diagonal line and looks like it belongs. Now take the null object and move it to the beginning of the new line. Now take the blue print background and the crayon line and parent it to the null. Parenting these objects allows everything to work together so if we adjust the null, everything else with adjust with it. Bring up the transform properties, move around in your timeline until the other lines start to occur and set a keyframe. Now move back to the beginning of the first line, zoom in and rotate it to about -45 degrees. Set a key frame when you have it zoomed in at the beginning.
    After these steps you might want to adjust some contrast levels and maybe add a gradient. As you can see I added a few pictures and a other solid with a gradient. But I encourage everyone to take this tutorial and run with it to make your own composition.
