CATS: Computer Arts and Technology Society RSO
CATS: Computer Arts and Technology Society is a brand new RSO that was founded this year at SIUC to promote computer arts and animation at the university. This student group was formed to provide a platform for students to explore new and innovative ideas in the fields of computer arts and technology, and to further provide a platform for students working with computer arts and technology to showcase their projects and creative work. Another aim of the RSO will eventually be to also facilitate connections between SIUC students and computer art and technology professionals. What is significant about CATS is that it is the first of its kind at SIUC, as it is the first RSO formed to represent computer arts and animation at the university.
As a result of what the RSO represents, CATS is a multi-faceted group in that it strives to cater to a variety of interests within computer arts, such as 3D animation, flash animation, gaming, and circuit bending. Activities of the group include organizing one-day workshops to teach software, organizing an animation festival, and reaching out to other groups to work on projects with. One current example of this is that the RSO has gone outside of the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts to work with another student RSO in computer science to produce a game. The work of CATS is significant and relevant to the future of SIUC, as there is talk of developing classes and programs even further to develop classes for fields such as gaming. Computer arts and animation are expanding and developing at the campus and a variety of talk and ideas have even mentioned starting degrees in computer animation at SIUC for students. The creation of CATS serves to emphasize and spread awareness of these developments and thus works to have a role in the future of SIUC education.
The promo that I aim to create in promotion of CATS should in itself express a multitude of topics as well as refers to the future of computer arts education at SIUC. Thus I will select images to represent the variety of computer arts categories that CATS represents, such as the below image of 3D computer animation work in progress that features the Maya software interface. I am also interested in perhaps showing short video clips that relate to teaching animation and might try to feature short segments from tutorials or any other footage of a work being done. For possible color schemes and other imagery to use, I also am considering borrowing from a flyer created from one of CATS' early meetings, which would also serve to help me organize the different categories of computer arts. Images to illustrate current projects CATS is involved in, such as game design, would also be crucial in promoting the opportunities for those who join the RSO.
